Enhancing Math Numeracy: SMP Negeri 6 Garut Teachers’ Training
On Thursday, May 30, 2024, 45 teachers from SMP Negeri 6 Garut participated in a training session focused on designing learning modules to improve students’ math numeracy skills. This event was organized by doctoral students from the Mathematics Education Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Tatang Herman, M.Ed., and Prof. Dr. Sufyani, M.Ed. The training was officially opened online by Prof. Al Jupri, S.Pd., M.Sc., Ph.D.
Dr. H. Budi Suhardiman, Principal of SMPN 6 Garut, welcomed the training enthusiastically. “Math numeracy is crucial for understanding and applying mathematical concepts in daily life. We hope this training helps our teachers design effective modules to enhance students’ numeracy skills,” he stated.
The teachers learned to design innovative, interactive, and contextual learning modules integrating math numeracy. David, the lead trainer, explained, “A good module should be engaging and easy to understand, motivating students to learn mathematics.”
The training also included practical module design, group discussions, and presentations. Science teacher Bu Desi Desmiawati, S.Pd., remarked, “I learned that numeracy can be integrated into various subjects, not just mathematics. I hope to apply this in my classroom soon.”
This training is a step by UPI’s doctoral students to improve the quality of math education in Indonesia. With skilled teachers, it is expected that the numeracy skills of SMPN 6 Garut students will continue to improve.
