UPI Implements New Requirements for PTESOL and TOEFL in Final Examinations
The Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) has officially introduced new policies regarding English proficiency requirements for students preparing for their final examinations. These policies aim to enhance students’ English skills as part of UPI’s commitment to delivering high-quality education.
Transitional Policy
According to Circular Letter No. 73 of 2024, a transitional policy will be in effect until January 2025 (odd semester 2024/2025). The provisions during this transitional period include:
- The validity period of English proficiency certificates will not be used as a filter in the academic system (SIAS).
- For Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) programs, English proficiency will only be required once, at the first examination stage.
- Students who have taken the English proficiency test three times without achieving the minimum score will still be permitted to take the final examination.
New Requirements Starting in Even Semester 2024/2025
Starting from the even semester of 2024/2025, the transitional policy will no longer apply, and the following rules will take effect:
- The validity period of English proficiency certificates will not be used as a filter in the academic system.
- Students must meet the requirements stated in the 2024 Academic Guidelines.
- Students who fail to achieve the minimum score after three tests are required to take an English course or training equivalent to 2 credits, organized by their faculty/SPs/regional campus, before taking subsequent tests.
- There must be a one-week interval between the first, second, and third tests to allow students time to prepare.
Faculty Support Initiatives
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (FPMIPA) at UPI has collaborated with the Language Center to provide 2-credit English training for students who have taken the PTESOL test three times but failed to achieve the minimum score of 450. This training is designed to better prepare students for subsequent tests and help them meet the target score.
Recommendations for Students
- Students are encouraged to take the PTESOL test early in their academic journey, avoiding a last-minute rush in their final semester.
- Study programs are expected to support students by aligning English courses with the requirements to help them achieve the target score.
With this new policy, UPI aims to provide more comprehensive support to students in enhancing their English proficiency, better preparing them for both academic and professional challenges.
For further information, students are advised to contact their respective faculties or refer to the official circular issued by the Vice-Rector for Education and Student Affairs.
