Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) proudly hosted the ATECCE Phase 2 Workshop on “Lesson Planning for Climate Action: Content, Pedagogy, Assessment”, organized by the Science Education and Biology Education Study Programs. The two-day event was held from Friday to Saturday, 18–19 July 2025, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Education (FPMIPA B Building), Bandung.
This international workshop brought together educators, facilitators, and experts from across Indonesia and Asia, aiming to strengthen teacher competencies in designing transformative learning experiences that address climate change and sustainability.
The event was opened with a series of remarks by distinguished figures, including:
- Prof. Dr. Al Jupri, S.Pd., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, FPMIPA UPI
- Prof. Dr. phil. Ari Widodo, M.Ed., Representative of the Indonesian Working Group of the ATECCE Project as well as the Head Study Program of Science Education
- Prof. Hiroki Fujii, Ph.D., Coordinator of the ATECCE Project and Director of the ESD Promotion Centre, Okayama University
The first day featured a keynote session by Prof. Dr. phil. Ari Widodo, M.Ed., who shared valuable insights on climate change issues in the Indonesian context. He guided participants on how to identify relevant issues and design classroom activities that meaningfully engage students with climate change themes. The day also included two engaging panel discussions led by experienced facilitators, as well as collaborative group work in which participants began crafting climate-integrated lesson plan ideas. These sessions provided a platform for sharing pedagogical strategies, assessment models, and real-world classroom practices aligned with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on Goal 13: Climate Action.
On the second day, Prof. Hiroki Fujii delivered an input session focusing on content, pedagogy, and assessment, enriched with numerous examples from educational practices in Japan. He highlighted specific cases of climate change and demonstrated how Japanese schools implement lesson designs to educate students about climate-related issues. The day continued with panel reflections, intensive group presentations, and peer feedback sessions, all aimed at refining participants’ lesson ideas into practical and applicable teaching materials.
The workshop concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Ari Widodo and Prof. Hiroki Fujii, encouraging participants to sustain the momentum and bring their climate action plans to life in classrooms across the region.
The ATECCE Phase 2 Workshop was part of the ongoing collaboration between Okayama University and Indonesian partners, under the Asia-Pacific framework for advancing climate education through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Further follow-up programs are scheduled in the coming months, including lesson study activities and reflection sessions to support the implementation of climate-focused lesson plans.
